Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) involves reshaping and reducing the size of the breasts by removing a portion of breast tissue and skin. In some cases, the areola (the pigmented area around the nipple) can also be resized to a more aesthetic proportion if it is overly large.

In certain patients, liposuction alone may be sufficient for breast reduction. If the breast mainly consists of fatty tissue and there is no significant excess of skin, liposuction can achieve the desired reduction.

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. The operation usually lasts between 2 to 3 hours. An overnight hospital stay is generally not required.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

This procedure is performed on patients whose breasts have sagged due to childbirth or weight fluctuations. It is carried out under general anesthesia and typically takes 2–3 hours. If there is insufficient breast tissue, a silicone implant may also be placed during the same procedure to both lift and reshape the breast.

To remove excess blood or air from the surgical site, small silicone drainage tubes may be placed for 24–48 hours. After surgery, the patient will wear a special anatomical bra. Showering is usually allowed three days after the operation.

Unless movements involve heavy lifting or strenuous exercise, patients can typically return to normal work and social activities within a few days. However, more intense physical activities and heavy exercise should be avoided for 3–4 weeks.

Following breast reduction surgery, there will be scars around the areola and extending vertically downwards in what is commonly referred to as a “lollipop” incision, or an “I” incision. These scars will gradually fade over time.
